CRDP: retired pay and VA compensation together at 50% or higher
Military retirees with 20 or more years of service rated 50% or higher may be eligible to receive retired pay and VA compensation together, verify with DFAS.
The offset, and what CRDP restores
Military retired pay is normally reduced dollar for dollar by VA disability compensation. Under 10 U.S.C. §1414, a military retiree with retired pay based on 20 or more years of service and a VA rating of 50% or higher may receive both in full: CRDP restores the offset amount.
CRDP is automatic. DFAS applies it without an application, which makes it unusual among the programs on this site. It is also retiree-only: a veteran without military retired pay has no offset to restore, regardless of rating.
The Chapter 61 fine print
Medical (Chapter 61) retirees with fewer than 20 years of service are not covered. Chapter 61 retirees with 20 or more years can receive CRDP, but the restoration is capped at the longevity portion of their retired pay.
CRDP cannot be drawn at the same time as CRSC; an annual open season lets retirees who qualify for both choose. DFAS decides and pays; verify your own status with DFAS.
